There are more videos from our Kanha Tiger Reserve safari in my first video Royal Bengal Tiger Spotting in Kanha National Forest. This video has new additional footage from our trip. There will be a few additional videos with some fantastic pictures of Royal Bengal Tigers in the Kanha National Park! So head over & Subscribe to my YouTube Channel now!

The video was taken with a handheld camera and I apologize for all the camera shake. At numerous times my attention moved to the tigers and off the video camera! I could not hold my excitement at many times and you would see that the tigers abruptly move out of camera.

At one time, when the Royal Bengal Tiger took a turn & started to walk towards our jeep, even though our driver & guide anticipated that, jolted the van & I dropped my camera. Fortunately I did not drop it badly so I could quickly recover filming again.

There were a lot of background noises – mostly of people. I wish they were tiger roars, but no! They were fellow tourists on the safari shrieking & screaming with excitement. Our guide would have to play the hard dad & keep our group under control. That could be another funny video later on.

Kanha has several watering holes where animals often gather in groups. The ones of Sondar Tank and Babathenga Tank are particularly popular with Royal Bengal Tigers. Apart from the glorious Royal Bengal Tigers you would also see a lot of jackals, various varieties of deer including the swamp-deer Bara Singha that is the native of Madhya Pradesh & probably found only in Kanha now. Wild pigs can also be spotted in meadows & grasslands.

I will post another short video of a Royal Bengal Tigress with her cubs at one of these watering holes. So Subscribe to ExloreIndiaTV on YouTube & you will not miss that.

The post More Royal Bengal Tigers of Kanha first appeared on Explore India TV.

A brief history of Kanha National Park & Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India

Kanha received the National Park status in 1955 & started the Royal Bengal Tiger rescue & rehabilitation program in 1974-75, at a time when the Royal Bengal Tiger population came to a threateningly low number (believed to be about 1800 at the beginning of 20th century), enough to indicate an extinction of the species by the end of the century.

A survey in 2004 indicated about 130 Royal Bengal Tigers left in the park. India’s total tiger population was at 2226 in 2014 & 3000 in 2019, that is, counting the tigers in their natural habitats.

The Kanha region is spread across four major districts of Madhya Pradesh:

Kanha – encompassing Kanha Meadows, Kanha Museum, Shravan Chita, Shravan Tal, Dashrath Machaan, Bison Road, Nakti Ghati, and Umerpani

Kisli – spanning over Digdola, Sonf Meadows, Kope Dabri, Magarnala, Mochidadar, Chimta Camp, Amahi, and Soonaghat

Sarahi – covering areas like Jamuntola, Ronda Camp, Mahuadabri, Urnakhera Camp, and Silpura Meadows

Mukki – spread across Bishanpura, Bamni Dadar, Duke’s Road, Ghorella, Sondar Meadows, Babathenga Tank, Lapsi Kabar, and Umar Jhola

Safaris in Kanha National Tiger Reserve are conducted in a very eco-friendly way today, under the rules & guidelines of the Indian Forest Services organization. Reservations can be done online & various tour related details are found on the sanctuary’s website.

For its uniqueness, Kanha boasts of having one of the largest Royal Bengal Tiger population in India. Apart from the tigers, swamp deer or bara-singhas (meaning ‘the ones with large antlers’) are also seen in large numbers here.

Barasinghas (Rucervus duvaucelii) are native to India & are mostly found in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh & some in Nepal. During the months of July & August, you could catch glimpses of numerous fawns and Barasingha herd.

The Royal Bengal Tigers still remain the biggest attraction of the park. The tour operators & the tour guides are some of the best. They constantly keep connected over the 360 square miles of the park, making it easier for tourists to quickly drive to those parts of the National Park where the tigers have been spotted.
